Of shipwrecks and hooped skirts

Ships have been linked to Australian history through an umbilical cord. And so have been shipwrecks. Sail by the coasts of Australia, and you are sure to find one or two submerged hulks peeping out of the ocean surface. Sail by the North East coast, and chances are you will join the host of submerged hulks in the Great Barrier Reef, a magical stretch of ocean that has brought down many. There are many enchanting and romantic tales of such bravado, ill-fate, or sheer pig-headedness around such wrecks. This is one such. Early in 20th century, 1911 to be precise, Magnetic Island was a rising centre of commerce. Doctor McCabe had a lavish paradise, aptly named Arcadia, where his rich female friends and acquaintances could visit. It was also the high time for bloomers and hooped skirts. The windy bay was precarious to the women’s modesty and Doctor McCabe, a dentist by profession, wanted to indulge the dignity of the women. He decided to install a breakwater, thus softening the windy ambience so threatening to his female friends. The idea was to tug along Moltke, an 827 ton vessel that had seen better days, which had ran aground on a reef at the northern end of Flinders Passage, between Townsville and Cape Bowling Green. Our doctor brought in a local bloke who claimed some expertise in explosives. They attached the Moltke to a tugboat, planning to blow the explosives on the Moltke when it was situated properly to act as a breakwater for Arcadia’s jetty, the prospective abode of our modest ladies. Our explosive bloke lit the fuse a little bit too soon, and seeing this tug-boat skipper cut the rope leaving Moltke on its own. To make virtue out of a situation gone hilariously wrong, the bloke and the doctor jump against an impressive firework, and they survive to ‘drill and fill another day’. Moltke went straight in the wrong place, and in shallow water. She did provide a sheltered anchorage for small crafts for many years, although she was no use as a breakwater for McCabe's jetty, and the merry citizens of Magnetic Island still remember the day a dentist blew the Moltke away. Today, many ferry services carry tourists to a concrete ramp only hundred metres away from where the Moltke gloriously sank. The stretches around the Great Barrier Reef is the graveyard of many more such glorious wreckages. A little further away from where Moltke sank, is the remains of another vessel called Maria – but it is another nice tale to be told another day. Lieutenant James Cook famously came along this route only, and discovered an island continent. In his train he brought criminal inmates, plundering gold prospectors, and today’s tourists. They come, they see, and they leave with enchanting tales of submerged hulks peeping out of historical times, shaking hands with a precarious present. Magnetic Island lies off Townsville. It is well connected by ferries from the mainland. Unless you plan to stay in Townsville you may stay in nearby Cairns, Reef Palms which provides vacation rental special offers with Cairns vacation accommodation, Great Barrier Reef trip and rainforest tour.

Hotel rocamar ibiza reviewed

Hotel Rocamar is a small holiday/business hotel situated in the area of Talamanca, the exclusive area of Ibiza town. It isn't such a tourist factory as most hotels on the island of Ibiza. Quiet the contrary, it only has 16 rooms. The building originates from the 60's. As far as known it has always been a hotel/pension. The current owners bought the old Hotel Rocamar back in 2001. Back in the 60's the hotel already had a vast group of steady visitors, some of which have been coming there since the 60's. In 2004 it was decided to renovate place dramatically without having it losing its traditional characteristics. Decided was for a modern, design interior and state of the art equipped rooms. As a result nowadays rooms are equipped with plasma screen TV, air conditioning, heating (yes for in the winter!) as well as a bunch of other small amenities at customer's disposal. Further the whole place has wireless internet connection. Most clients of the hotel come there for the extremely laid down atmosphere, the very qualified and informal staff and off course to enjoy the sun and nightlife for which Ibiza is famous. Here the staff knows many of their customers by first name. Checking in isn't a time consuming or aggravating process here. Known customers are just being saluted and handed the key; that's all! Like people come "home". Foreign languages aren't an obstacle neither as staff speaks seven without any problems and is always happy to chitchat with the customers. What sort of people go to the Rocamar? During summer season mostly holiday seekers. People that like the personalised treat that can be expected in a hotel with only 16 rooms. As said before: people aren't numbers here. Clients love the quietness in the Rocamar and enjoy relaxing at the hotel's terrace with perhaps the most beautiful views on the Ibiza Bay and the old town capital. During winter the hotel stays open, with only a 6 weeks break around the Christmas holidays. During winter many business travellers frequent the hotel as well as some tourists that like the winter quietness on the island. Don't forget, Ibiza, in summer, is a main party center with some of the most renowned discotheques in the world. Unfortunately not all of Rocamar's 16 rooms are of the same seize. They are varying from rather small to average size room amongst hotels in Ibiza. The reason for this is the "old" building structure which doesn't leave any space for alternatives. Sometims this has lead to initial disappointments with clients although usually the excellent quality of the room interior makes up for this inconvenience. Futher it is a petty that Rocamar doesn't have a an active restaurant anymore at the moment. The area where the restaurant used to be is currently only used for the, included, breakfast. Further due to lack of space within the property a swimming pool isn't available neither although customers may use the pool of a neighbouring hotel. Compared to the earlier days nothing has changed with respect to Rocamar's customers. The customers keep coming back, year after year and some of them were there in the late 60's already. rocamaribiza

When many travelers arrive in Maui, many dream and aspire to try new things, such as surfing. For that reason, if you are serious about taking lessons, you may want to ensure that there is a spot waiting for you. As previously stated, there are a number of Maui travel arrangements that you will need to make before your trip. Before making your Hawaii airline reservations, your Maui overnight accommodation reservations, and your Maui car rental reservations separately, you may want to examine vacation packages. Even if you are unable to find a suitable vacation package for your next Maui trip, you may want to consider making all or at least most of your Maui travel arrangements through the same online travel website, such as HawaiianBeachRentals.

Speaking spanish in spain

One of the best ways to experience a Spanish speaking country is to be able to understand what is being said around you. So, why not learn Spanish? It’s not as difficult as it may sound. You can actually learn to speak Spanish from the comfort of you own home with your personal computer as your teacher. Luckily, there are a number of online programs that will teach you what you need to know to communicate once you get to Spain. In addition to getting a better feel for the Spanish culture by speaking the language, there are other benefits of leaning the language as well. Once you return home from your trip, being able to be bilingual is very coveted by employers and may open up a whole world of new jobs to you. Learning Spanish Online The biggest benefit of learning Spanish online is that you can gear the course to your speed. You do not have to worry about keeping up with the class, you can do as much or as little as you want each time you sit down to learn. When you get on the internet and conduct a search you will notice there are a number of websites that offer Spanish courses from home. Some are free; others will charge you for the classes. Generally, those that charge do have more to offer and a more comprehensive learning program. The largest worldwide Spanish instruction organization is the Instituto Cervantes. The whole goal of the organization is to promote Spanish culture and the teaching of Spanish worldwide. It was founded in 1991 as a public institution in Spain. Now it is spreading out and is in four continents. These courses are very detailed. They do teach all the areas necessary for speaking Spanish such as the spelling, grammar, vocabulary and phonetics. But, they also teach the importance of Spanish culture, and about socio cultural issues. Once You’ve Completed Learning Spanish Online While taking courses is a good way to learn the language, the best way to know you are ready to use it and to become more fluent is to immerse your self in a situation where you must speak Spanish and see how well you do. Traveling to a Spanish speaking country is a good way to be surrounded by the culture and traditions as well as be surrounded by the language. There are also programs called language immersion programs in Madrid, Seville and Barcelona. These are considered the by-far fastest way to learn the language and become fluent. The immersion classes are geared towards smaller groups of students with a number of activities where you must use Spanish and only speak Spanish. In addition to classroom time there are many times you will be out in the public and interact with people, honing your skills. When it comes to accommodations you may be put in an apartment with another student, or be hosted by a local family which will be a great opportunity to learn the culture of the country first-hand.

Tuscany car rental made easy

Seasoned travellers and novices alike will find it is not difficult to rent a car in Tuscany. There may be a few minor obstacles to getting around, just as there would be in any other new location, but in general a Tuscany car rental is easy to acquire and simple to use. Reserving Your Car Most of the major car rental companies do business in Europe and have areas of their web sites for International rental. What may differ from booking a more local car rental is that you may not have as many choices in cars or be as familiar with the makes and models of your choices. Cars in Europe tend to be smaller for the average renter. There are still luxury and larger rentals available, but they are not as common for navigating the narrow cities streets, many of which were built centuries ago. To make a reservation you will need a valid diver’s license in the country in which you reside. Generally you do not need an International license unless you will be spending a long time in the area. You will also need a credit car to hold the reservation. Once the booking is complete, you will be given a reservation number that you can use to pick up your car rental at the airport or train station. Driving Around Tuscany Tuscany is a wonderful region to explore by car. It is dotted with major cities just short drives apart, with quaint villages filling in the gaps. There are breathtaking coastal drives and lazy, meandering cruises through the rolling hills of the countryside. With a car rental you can take it all in at your own pace. You can drive through the wine region of Chianti and stop for a picnic and afternoon nap. You can park on the outskirts of the city and then walk through the streets to each tourist destination. The driving in Tuscany is done as it is in the United States. Drivers stay to the right and the wheel is on the left – the opposite of Great Britain. The biggest difference an American driver may notice is the speeds. Many highways have very high speed limits equivalent to around 90 or 100 miles per hour or none at all! The best way to stay safe is to keep up with the flow of traffic. Slower drivers may actually be more of a hazard on this type of highway. Many secondary roads in the country can be impassable during bad weather since the countryside is not as well travelled in some areas. You’ll want to plan according to the season. Driving in Luxury If you want the best of both worlds – the freedom of your own car and the carefree feeling of public transportation, then you may want to look into hiring a car with a driver included. Drivers are familiar with the roads, rules and system, so they can quickly get you where you want to go, while maintaining your schedule or lack thereof. More of the benefits of driving mean you can pack more. You can also bring along picnics, shop to the capacity of the car’s trunk (and your budget for shipping items) that you may find along the country roads in Tuscany. Renting a car is the best way to be sure you get to do what you want, and on your own timetable.

Planning out before traveling

One of the world's most popular tourist attractions is the famous Grand Canyon. Located in the northwest region of Arizona, it is also one of the most famous natural tourist attractions. The National Park Service manages the Grand Canyon, as a major portion of the Grand Canyon lies within the Grand Canyon National Park. If you have decided to plan a trip to the Grand Canyon for your adventure holidays then it is best to be prepared for everything before you leave. 1. Plan out your trip: First and foremost you must decide on how to get there. Do you want to take a family road trip to the Grand Canyon or do you want to save time and money and fly to the place instead? Before you embark on your journey you should always take into consideration all factors like the rising gas prices and which of the two options would benefit you both physically and economically. It is after you have thought about all these factors that you should make your plan when traveling USA. 2. Self vs. the travel agent: while planning your trip you should also decide whether you want to plan out your trip by yourself or do you want to hire the services of a travel agent. By enlisting the services of a travel agent not only will you save on money and time, but they will also help you to experience the complete wonders of the magnificent Grand Canyon, as it is their job to plan the best vacations for others. 3. Child friendly environments: keeping in mind the different ages of your children, you should try to find out whether the destination or the trip will be suitable for them or not. For instance, if you have a baby, then try to find out whether the hotel or resort where you are staying offers services such as providing cribs or childcare. 4. Pet care: if you are one of those people who love to take their pets along with them on holidays, then you should always remember to ensure that the hotel or resort in which you will be staying in allows their guests to bring their pets with them. If you don't want to keep your pet locked in the room for the whole day while you are out enjoying, then definitely ensure that the destination is pet friendly. 5. Home protection: to protect your home while you are gone you can talk to your neighbors and ask them to keep an eye on your home. You can also ask a family friend or a relative to check in your home while you are gone. 6. Clothing: you should always remember to pack appropriate clothing for your trip. Always remember to pack clothes, such as, sweatshirt or sweater, bandana or a hat, gloves, jackets, shoes, raincoat or ponchos, cut off pants for hiking and socks. 7. First Aid: first aid is an essential item for all trips; so do not forget to pack first aid items for your trip. The items that you should essentially carry are antiseptic, band-aids, ace bandage, chap stick, burn ointment, gauze compresses, foot blister pads/powder, first aid tape, sun-tan lotion, salt tablets and a sharp knife. 8. Miscellaneous items: you should also carry a few miscellaneous items like maps, compasses, eye wash, ear plugs, water, flashlight, blankets, fire starter, anti-bacterial soaps, waterproof matches, paper/pencils, moist wipes, a sewing kit, sun glasses and toilet paper. 9. Sunscreen: to protect your family form sunburns, you should pack a sunscreen lotion that has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. 10. Toiletries: you should also pack a few toiletry items, such as, wash cloth, laundry bag, mirror, tooth paste, tooth brush, soap, sleep wear, sanitary supplies and shaving articles. While traveling do not carry a large sum of money or all of credit cards with you. It is always advisable to carry traveler's checks or traveler's debit card. These will help you to replace your funds incase they are stolen or lost. It is always better to be safe than sorry, so even if it means over packing, prepare yourself for everything. However, in the end do not forget to have a safe and sound trip.

Cheap african vacations

The words Cheap Africa Vacations don't really make sense, so why did you search under these three words? If you think about it logically, the word 'cheap' has come to mean poor quality, when really what you want is quality that is inexpensive!! The question now is, do you know anything that is cheap, but is good quality, so don't think you can get Cheap Africa vacations that are also high quality!! The next point is Africa - you need to be more specific - after all Africa is a very large continent, with huge differences in scenery, climate, and cultures, so where in Africa do you rally want to take a cheap vacation? Consider this - Africa takes in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, all different in themselves, but vastly different to Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, which are themselves different to South Africa. We must add to this list, the offshore islands of Zanzibar, and perhaps The Seychelles, and Mauritius, although it would be easy to argue they belong to The Indian Ocean, and wouldn't qualify as somewhere to go for a Cheap Africa Vacation. Finally from the three words Cheap Africa Vacations, we must take the word 'Vacation'. What does a vacation mean to you, because the success or failure of your hard earned break depends entirely on your family unit all being happy with the same kind of vacation. You may think a safari would be amazing, but how do you feel about tents, creepy crawlies? Do you want to spend time looking at ancient treasures and tombs? Are you basically a bone idle beach bum, at your happiest with a good book and a cool refreshing glass? How about the noise, and smell and adventure of the 'souk' with lots of hassle and excitement? Is sophistication necessary for enjoyment? Be in no doubt the continent of Africa offers a great variety of vacation opportunities. From Egypt on the northeastern coast to the game reserves of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, there is something for everybody. The most popular tourist areas are those bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the northeastern coast, such as Tunisia, and Morocco, then the islands of the Seychelles. An area of increasing popularity in South Africa is a wine tour. At the opposite end of the continent several thousand miles away, Egypt is home to countless antiquities. A visit to Africa should be made with great care, as it is too large to tackle in one trip. You need to focus on a region and allow enough time to adequately see that area of the continent.

All about durham nc

Durham is the county seat for Durham County in North Carolina. It is considered to be the cornerstone of the Research Triangle region within the state and is also recognized as the fourth largest city in the state in terms of population. As of 2005, the population in the city was listed as 1,509,560 and the city continues to grow each day. Durham was originally established in 1853 when a place for a railroad depot was deemed necessary within the state. A country physician by the name of Bartlett S. Durham lived along the railroad route and also had his practice established along the route. He agreed to donate some of his land to the railroad, which was named Durham Station. Prior to the Civil War, the town grew slowly. Following the war, however, the population began to increase rapidly and the city received its official charger in 1869. Much of the population growth in the area was due to the tobacco industry, which really started to thrive at this time. Tobacco soon became the backbone to the economy in Durham, though textiles soon became a close second. Due to the rapid growth of the city a this time, much of the commercial and residential architecture in the city today dates back to the period falling between 1890 through 1930. A vibrant African-American community also quickly developed in the city. In fact, some of the most successful businesses to be owned by African-Americans were established in this city during the 20th century. Some of these include Mechanics & Farmer’ Bank and North Carolina Mutual Insurance Co. Parrish Street, which is where many of these businesses were located, soon became known as the “Black Wall Street.” Durham continues to have a melting pot of ethnicities today. In addition, it is home to the North Carolina Central University, the Durham Technical Community College and, perhaps most notably, Duke University.

The appeal of taking a honeymoon cruise

One of the most stressful and chaotic times of anyone’s life is the planning of their wedding. Making the guest list, getting registered at stores, delegating tasks to family and friends, planning the ceremony and reception and a hundred other little details to attend to, it’s no wonder planning a wedding can push most people to the breaking point. After all the planning and the successfully pulling off the wedding it’s no wonder that newlyweds need a honeymoon to unwind and spend their first moments together as a couple together alone. A honeymoon cruise can be the perfect way to leave all that behind and give the happy couple the privacy and solitude they desire. Probably the greatest thing about a honeymoon cruise is the sense of utter isolation the newlyweds can experience. There is little chance of an intrusion from the outside world when the cruise ship is hundreds of miles offshore giving the newlyweds the opportunity for time alone. All of the stresses of life can be left behind with little chance of interruption by even the most well intentioned friends and family. Cruising the clear blue waters of the tropics is the perfect way for a newlywed couple to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. With little chance of even cell phones working the chances of the outside world intruding on their time is limited. Getting away from it all is definitely a plus on a honeymoon cruise. During a honeymoon cruise the happy couple has the option of mingling with other people and making new friends or they can spend time to themselves enjoying the amenities and activities cruise ships are famous for. There’s an activity for just about everyone on board, from games on deck and pool side, to dancing, movies and nightly entertainment. In addition to all the onboard fun there are tropical ports of call where the couple can lose themselves in sightseeing and other tourist fare. When talking about taking a honeymoon cruise we cannot let the subject of food to be left out. After all, food is what cruises are most famous for. And all that food, whether it’s fine dining, a burger pool side, a quick snack, or even room service is included in the price of the cruise. The newlywed couple can eat whatever they want whenever they feel like it. And for the newlyweds who spend a lot of time in their stateroom getting food at odd hours is a big plus. Taking a honeymoon cruise can be the perfect getaway after the craziness of a wedding. Finding a cruise package that fits your budget is as easy as using the power of the internet to check the offerings of the many cruise lines in the world today.

Hawaii cruise holiday vacation

There are many ways you can get to Hawaii for your holiday vacation and one very common and popular way is to take a cruise to Hawaii. In this way, your holiday vacation starts when the cruise ship leaves the port of your embarkation. The Norwegian Cruise Line or the NCL for short calls very often at Hawaiian various ports. American citizens will need to bring along their passports for this cruise because besides calling on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, the cruise ships also visit Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati. This weekly 7 night cruise on the Norwegian Star, which is in service since 2001, will begin the cruise and end in the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu. Twice a year, the Norwegian Wind, a sister ship of the Norwegian Star, sails from Vancouver in Canada to Honolulu over a span of eleven days. Both the ships are huge and sometimes are sometimes called floating islands. Housed within the ships are swimming pools, volley ball and basketball courts, spas, fitness centers, theaters, beauty salons, dance clubs and of course, a wide array of restaurants catering to all taste buds. The days of dining with two formal seating times for dinner at assigned tables are over. Passengers can now decide how they want to eat, when to eat and what to eat. They can choose from various cuisines such as Asian, Italian or French cuisines in either casual or formal wear. Modern day dinning in cruise ships are no longer formal affair unless you choose to opt for eating in formal restaurants. To occupy yourself when in a cruise ship to Hawaii, you can go to computer classes, attend health and wellness seminars and enroll you kids in a variety of children's programs. At each port of call, passengers may also choose a variety of land excursions and activities, such as visiting famous Hawaiian volcanoes, go scuba diving or whale watching or just simply relaxing by the beach. Many other cruise ships also call on Hawaiian ports regularly. Some of these cruise lines include The Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess, Cunard, Seabourn and Celebrity cruise ships. Booking and paying for your cruise way in advance could save you some money especially when the cruises are fully booked. However, if you intend to cruise to Hawaii during off peak season, then you can take a chance at last minute booking as the cruise lines may sell cheaper unsold tickets. Before placing your cruise bookings, do ask about round trip, reduced fare air supplements and discounts for children traveling with full fare paying adults. Some cruises do offer summer family cruise packages and if you did not ask, you could never have known.

Top 5 most romantic cities in the world

Whether you’re trying to find a vacation location to wow your new love, looking for a dream honeymoon destination or celebrating your 20th anniversary, here are the Top 5 Most Romantic Cities in the World to simplify your search. Coming in at Number 5…. PARIS, FRANCE It’s clichй, but you cannot leave the City of Love, Paris, off the list. People would complain. Especially French people. Although its ‘cheesy’ factor puts it at the bottom of our top 5 list, you cannot argue that the thought of writing sidewalk poetry, eating croissants at a cafй or enjoying genuine French cuisine and wine while dining in view of the Eiffel Tower does sound sigh-inducingly romantic… Next at the door, Number 4…. VENICE, ITALY Italy has long been touted as one of the leading romantic countries, and this fantasy-city of canals, bridges and gondoliers must rate as the most picturesque of the many Italian cities vying to be on the list. Venice has some of the most beautiful buildings in the world, with ornate palaces wherever you look. True chocolate-box country this. Right in the middle at Number 3…LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, USA So tacky it’s actually cool, Las Vegas is for those couples who like the ‘bright lights, big city’ kind of holiday. For Elvis impersonators, luxury resorts, more bling than you can handle and of course all those casinos you can’t beat Las Vegas for a wild vacation destination… and if you’re trying to get your sweetie to tie the knot, feed him or her some of the champagne that practically flows in the streets of this party capital and soon the idea of nipping off the The Little White Chapel of Lurve will seem like a brilliantly romantic idea! (Hey, it worked for Brittney!) Just missing the top spot, but still not too shabby at Number Two... JAMAICA (ok, it’s not a city; it’s an island, but play along…) For an island-stylee holiday choose the largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean. Funky music, exciting new tastes in cuisine, enchanting views and fabulously friendly locals make Jamaica as exotically romantic a destination as you could ever wish for. Drum roll please…in prime position at Number 1… CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA Yes it’s now official – because it says so right here: Cape Town, the Mother City at the tip of the great African Continent, is The Most Romantic City in the World. If you want luxurious accommodation, awe-inspiring scenery, a world of fun and exciting activities, beautiful beaches, magnificent wildlife and the best shopping, eating, and nightlife venues then you can’t beat Cape Town. Which explains why so many couples choose to get married or go there on honeymoon. It’s a wrap! Get hold of your travel agent, get online, get brochures, get packing – get out of here! Don’t forget to take your loved one with you though! And if you’re single, who knows? You may just meet your soul-mate in one of these heavenly destinations!
